The luxury car brand Rolls-Royce, which currently belongs to the BMW, group, is preparing to launch its first 100% electric luxury car. Your Silent Shadow, as this hyper-luxury electric will be called, is inspired by the luxurious concept car 103EX of 2016. This futuristic supercar could be the beginning of a new range of the brand's models, even though nothing is known yet in concrete.
As for Silent Shadow, Autocar said that it will be based on the aluminum platform used in the new Phantom (prototype that is being used only as a test bench for the new electric motor). The electric motors developed by the BMW group are exclusively electric and will be used in the BMW i7, which is expected to hit the market in 2022 and will face the Mercedes EQS.
Regarding the batteries to be used, there are still no certainties, but consider that the solution involves energy cells supplied by Samsung SDI. Although there is also the possibility that both Rolls-Royce and BMW will adopt the energy cell technology, developed by the Chinese company CATL. The capacity of these batteries should exceed 100 kWh, and guarantee an autonomy of at least 500 kilometers.
The details of the Silent Shadow have not yet been released, however Rolls-Royce assured that it has already completed the development of new rear-wheel drive systems, specifically for this model. All of this in a luxury car where the total weight can be close to, or even exceed, three tons.
In statements, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös commented that “We need to make smart decisions about where we invest our money. It can be good for larger companies to go into hybrids and all kinds of different technologies. We needed to make the right decision”. We must understand from the statement that it is unlikely that Rolls-Royce will pass through intermediate technologies such as hybrids.
