First “Sustainable Golf Week” promoted by the GEO Foundation

The first "Sustainable Golf Week" will take place between the 3rd and 9th of October 2022, it is organized by the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf with its partners and collaborators worldwide. This first event essentially serves to reflect, celebrate and accelerate the community's efforts to build a more sustainable future for the golf industry.

Some of the GEO Foundation's key partners and contributors in accelerating sustainability through, and in golf, include; The R&A, European Tour Group, Ryder Cup Europe, Ladies European Tour, LPGA, The Toro Company, Dow, Vidauban Foundation, Visit Scotland, Galvin Green, Motocaddy, Provision Events, Sky Sports, IAGTO and around 50 federations and industry associations in 25 countries.

Sustainable Golf Week will highlight golf's achievements in sustainability, celebrate the ecological actions of many golf courses, developers, designers, tournaments, players and companies. And also to pursue actions and steps that still need to be done to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Fortunately, there are more and more concerns and actions related to the theme, people and organizations in more than 75 countries are already part of this growing movement. Some of the already certified fields include; St Andrews Links in the United Kingdom, Golfs d'Hardelot in France, Circolo Golf Villa d'Este in Italy, PGA Catalunya Golf and Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande in Spain, Al Mouj Golf in Oman, TPC Scottsdale in the United States of America, among many others.

The inaugural event has as its central theme “Driving The Green” which aims to encourage various mainstream and social media initiatives to support the sustainable work being carried out across the industry. Sustainable Golf Week will champion the work of leaders in the golf industry with inspiring examples and insights into practical steps everyone involved in the sport can take to advance the green agenda.

Jonathan Smith, Executive Director of the GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf said about the event; “Sustainable Golf Week provides an opportunity for people of all sports to connect around a common purpose, to ensure that golf establishes itself as a trusted global leader in sustainability and climate action. It's about helping bring a stronger collective focus to the issues, as well as creating ever-increasing energy and momentum for golf's contribution. We are excited about the ways in which this week can be an ever-increasing catalyst for more action and visibility for golf and sustainability around the world.”

Suzann Pettersen, champion of sustainable golf and captain of the 2023 Solheim Cup, who is among the supporters of this week's activities commented; “Many environmental issues are fundamentally important to our quality of life. So while action is vital to the future of golf, we also have to play our part among communities, in business and with governments alike. We must be at the forefront of the global movement in sustainable sport and, equally, we must take the time to proudly celebrate our positive contributions.”
