Description

Royal Portrush Golf Club, one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.

Situated in the Causeway Coast & Glens area of outstanding natural beauty, the Royal Portrush Golf Club is situated in a triangle of gigantic sandy hills that boast magnificent views in all directions, the hills of Donegal to the west, the Isle of Islay and the Southern Hebrides in the north, with the iconic Giant's Causeway and the Skerries in the east.

The courses are dominated by the 13th century ruins of Dunluce Castle and this gives its name to the famous Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush, one of the most challenging golf courses in the world.

The Royal Portrush Golf Club was founded in May 1888 as The County Club. In 1892 under the patronage of the Duke of York it became The Royal County Club. Its current name, Royal Portrush Golf Club, was given in 1895 under the patronage of King Edward VII (then Prince of Wales).

It was here that the Irish Open Amateur Championship was opened in 1892 and then the Irish Professional Championship in 1907. In 1895, Portrush was the first field outside England to host the British Ladies Championship.

The initial 1888 course had only nine holes but the following year it was extended to 18 holes, eight of those holes were placed on the land side of Causeway Road, gradually, however, the course was moved further and further into the sandy hills.
